What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth cap that’s permanently fitted on top of an existing root structure, like a dental implant or a natural tooth root.

Unlike a veneer, which only covers the front surface of your tooth, a crown covers the entirety of your tooth above the gum line, where it can restore, reinforce, or replace a tooth that’s damaged, decayed, unsightly, or missing.

What Are Crowns Made Of?

Some of the dental crown materials available at Diamond Dental include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Porcelain with zirconia
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Cast gold
  • Ceramic

Each material has different pros and cons, and your dentist helps you to select a material that best suits your needs, preferences, and budgets!

How Do Crowns Work?

The team at Diamond Dental use crowns for a wide variety of purposes, such as to:

  • Strengthen a damaged tooth
  • Reinforce a decayed tooth
  • Replace an unsightly tooth
  • Restore function in a badly worn tooth
  • Improve your ability to speak or chew
  • Attach a bridge

Your dentist also typically fits you with a crown after you’ve had a root canal in order to restore and reinforce its structural integrity.

What Is A Same-day Crown?

Also known as a CEREC crown, a same-day crown is a type of dental restoration that is created while you are in our office using a CEREC milling machine. The crown is fabricated from ceramic for a durable, natural appearance. We can make your crown in a single visit.

What Is The Process Of Getting A Crown?

While we offer traditional 2-3 visit crowns, which can take up to three weeks to place, the team at Diamond Dental can cap your tooth in just one office visit. First, your dentist uses an intraoral camera and computer-aided design to create a 3D image of your damaged tooth. The impression is used to create your dental crown in our on-site CEREC milling machine, which essentially 3D prints your restoration!

While the CEREC machine is creating your crown, your dentist will prepare your tooth just like they normally would. Your dentist will remove a portion of the enamel so that the crown will fit securely and comfortably, making sure that it looks completely natural once placed.

When your crown is ready, your dentist places the restoration. They will check that the fit is good and finally seal it with a resin that hardens upon exposure to a special light. The whole process can take as little as one hour, depending on the type of restoration you need. As soon as you leave our office, your smile will be just like new!

How Long Do Crowns Last?

A traditional porcelain crown will last 10-15 years with proper at-home care. Same-day crowns have the same average lifespan as a porcelain crown. No matter which type of crown you choose, be sure to take great care of it!

How Do I Care for My Crown?

Your crown can be cared for just like the rest of your natural teeth. Just make sure to brush and floss daily and maintain regular cleaning appointments and exams with the team at Diamond Dental.

Don’t wait any longer to restore your smile. Schedule your dental crown consultation today by calling the office at (203) 403-2428 or booking online.
